Is it possible to use DotNetNuke for authenticating users of other applications?  I am working on a 3D game that has nothing to do with DotNetNuke but I want to only allow my sites registered users (or users of a particular security group) to be able to play the game.  In my game gui i would provide a login screen, once the user logs I send the request to DNN and expect a Success/Fail message back.  Possibly even more info if the login was a success.

Has anyone done something like that with DNN?

This is possible.  If you are using ASP.NET 2.0 it's even easier.  You could even leverage the role based security in DotNetNuke if you wrote your own Role Provider.  You will need to modify the web.config in your custom application with a few details from your DotNetNuke web.config.  Copy your machinekey information and forms authentication elements.

<authentication mode="Forms">

<forms name=".DOTNETNUKE" protection="All" timeout="60" cookieless="UseCookies" path="/" enableCrossAppRedirects="true" />

</authentication>

Hope this helps.

Thanks Will, I have been out of the .NET scene for a while so I cant say that I understand 100% what you mean but I think I get the idea.  I guess I was kinda hoping that the functionality was already there and that all I would have to do is mimic the login module from my external application.

So just to clarify, you are saying that I need to create a separate application from dotnetnuke and as long as they are running in the same server I should be able to authenticate against DNN.

Is it possible to create a module for DNN that allows me to authenticate on DNN and return a XML file if user info is correct?  Reason I would want this is because I also want my game server to post back game statistics on DNN.  I also want to store player inventory on the DNN database so that the player can log in to my site and see their inventory and possibly trade with other users.

Thanks again,

Afrim

Have a look at this free module:

I have not tried it yet but for the price it's worth a look.
