Hi,

 I used the default for installing the dotnetnuke website. (starterkit version 4.3.5, VisualStudio 2005, SQLExpress2005)

I use SQLExpress with the following connection strings

<connectionStrings>

<!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express -->

<add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=false;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>

<!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2000/2005

<add

name="SiteSqlServer"

connectionString="Server=(local);Database=DotNetNuke;uid=;pwd=;"

providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

-->

</connectionStrings>

<appSettings>

<!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules -->

<add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;"/>

<!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2000/2005 - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules

<add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Server=(local);Database=DotNetNuke;uid=;pwd=;"/>

-->

I get the following error:

Error Installing DotNetNuke. Current Assembly Version: 04.03.05. ERROR: Could not connect to database specified in connectionString for SqlDataProvider ...

Your solution suggests that use the database name, user name and password. Should I manually create a new database, I am using Windows authentication for SQLExpress database. Should I give the userid and password then?

Thank you and Regards,
RSB

RSB,

You need to take some time to read the last post I made. I went into detail on how I set up mine. But to help you I will go over it one more time.

 <connectionStrings>
  <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express -->
  <add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=workstation\SQLExpress;Database=your database;user ID=Your user id;Password=your password;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
  <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2000/2005
    <add
      name="SiteSqlServer"
      connectionString="Server=(local);Database=DotNetNuke;uid=;pwd=;"
      providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
   -->
 </connectionStrings>
 <appSettings>
  <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules   -->
  <add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Data Source=workstation\SQLExpress;Database=your database;User ID=your user id;Password=your password;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;"/>
  <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2000/2005 - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules
    <add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Server=(local);Database=DotNetNuke;uid=;pwd=;"/>
    -->

The above connection string is what I use for SQL express 2005. By default it is commited out in your web.config file. You need to replace the arrows in red like I have shown above.  "Data Source=workstation" This is where the name of your computer goes. "Database=your database;user ID=Your user id;Password=your password;" you need to type this in by hand exactly as it is above, but input your own info for the name of your database,password, and ID. You have to do this for the app settings and the connection string for sql express 2005. You also need to comment out the sql 2000/2005 connection and app settings. The above text is what it should look like minus your own settings.

Thank you very much.  My question was to whether to create a new SQLExpress database?  Initially, I used all the defaults for installation and hence got the connection string error.

But I tried the following:  Create a new SQLExpress database and then use that connection string in the web.config file.  If it is windows authentication, you neednt give userid and password. I didnt give one and it works fine.

 Thank you very much!

Warm Regards,
RSB
