I'm attempting to install DNN 4.3.5 locally with SQL Server 2005 Express. After configuring everything as per the included documentation I get the following error when I first hit the site and before DNN auto installs:

ERROR: Could not connect to database specified in connectionString for SqlDataProvider

Here is my connection string (in ConnectionStrings):

<add
      name="SiteSqlServer"
      connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|DotNetNuke.mdf;"
      providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

as well as (in appSettings):

<add key="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|DotNetNuke.mdf;"/>

Any thoughts?

If everything else is set up right ,your web.config(open in notepad and edit these lines) for 2005 express should be uncommited and 2000/2005 should be commited out.

<!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express ->
    <add
      name="SiteSqlServer"
      connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Database=your database;User ID=your user ID;Password=your password;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;"
      providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />-->

Delete the commit out arrows and type by hand the database info highlighted. Once your done do the same for the "<appSettings>".

Final result will look like this:

 <connectionStrings>
  <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express -->
  <add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=workstation\SQLExpress;Database=your database;user ID=Your user id;Password=your password;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
  <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2000/2005
    <add
      name="SiteSqlServer"
      connectionString="Server=(local);Database=DotNetNuke;uid=;pwd=;"
      providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
   -->
 </connectionStrings>
 <appSettings>
  <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules   -->
  <add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Data Source=workstation\SQLExpress;Database=your database;User ID=your user id;Password=your password;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;"/>
  <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2000/2005 - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules
    <add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Server=(local);Database=DotNetNuke;uid=;pwd=;"/>
    -->

So add in your your name ,your database, and your password in the highlight areas and commit out the connection strings around the connection string for both sql 2000/2005 settings. Remember not to copy and paste because you could get white space in the code and it will result in an error. Good luck!

Thank you for your help.

This fixed part of the problem. DNN will now install but modules still have connection string issues. I used exactly the same string for both the <ConnectionStrings> and <appSettings> section of the web.config file.

I get the following error on all my modules:

Error: Links is currently unavailable.
DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: Value cannot be null. Parameter name: connectionString ---> System.ArgumentNullException: Value cannot be null. Parameter name: connectionString at Microsoft.ApplicationBlocks.Data.SqlHelper.ExecuteReader(String connectionString, String spName, Object[] parameterValues) at DotNetNuke.Modules.Links.SqlDataProvider.GetLinks(Int32 ModuleId) at DotNetNuke.Modules.Links.LinkController.GetLinks(Int32 ModuleId) at DotNetNuke.Modules.Links.Links.Page_Load(Object sender, EventArgs e) --- End of inner exception stack trace ---

My web.config was configured like so:

  <connectionStrings>
    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express -->
    <add
      name="SiteSqlServer"
      connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Database=DotNetNuke;User ID=mred;Password=123;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;"
      providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2000/2005
    <add
      name="SiteSqlServer"
      connectionString="Server=(local);Database=DotNetNuke;uid=;pwd=;"
      providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
   -->
  </connectionStrings>
  <appSettings>
    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules   -->
    <add key="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Database=DotNetNuke;User ID=mred;Password=123;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;"/>
    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2000/2005 - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules
    <add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Server=(local);Database=DotNetNuke;uid=;pwd=;"/>
    -->

I'm not sure about that error but try this.

="Data Source=.\SQLExpress

Add the machine name there for both strings. I think I left this out. My computer name is workstation. Add that to the two string in the web.config file you just edited.

<!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules   -->
  <add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Data Source=workstation\SQLExpress;Database=DotNetNuke;User ID=mred;Password=123;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;"/>
