I just re-read your posts.  If it is working on one portal of the same DNN install, and not on the other, then it may be something to do with a virtual directory mapping.  The virtual directory may not have the .axd mapping where the main website does.  You shouldn't need a virtual directory to run multiple portals but it may be configured that way.

John: I am not using any virtual directories ... the portal with the issue is setup using a domain alias.

Bringing this to closure (I think) ... I had to remove Scott McCulloch's Friendly URL Rewriter from my HttpModules section to get rid of the javascript error.  I am now unwinding the various other modifications that I have made - so far, so good.  I will update the thread if the error comes back - hopefully not, but if so I will try to isolate the combination that caused it.

I would like to thank John Mitchell for his help and support - most appreciated.
