Hello!

I have an install that I use hosted buy webhosting4life (which they are fantastic!). But Building my site is slow. Is there a way I can load DNN on my machine, test it / build it, then upload it? (Like I do with normal static sites)

I know that it my be extensive to explain, so we maybe you know of some documentation on doing this?

Thanks a million!

Gabe

you can create a copy at your local machine with local Database server and need to backup modified local database and restore on online sql server as well as copying all files from install directory to remote server. be careful to make backups before overwriting anything. I would prefer to find the reasons for slow behaviour instead.

I agree, if building your site is slow as you put it, then I would look at the root cause of that first - try emptying out all your log files because that made a huge difference for me.

I will say that I also use WH4L and am fairly happy with them, although one of my clients has already reported a "Server is too busy" error that I had to log an emergency helpdesk call with them on.  Took about 30 minutes to get resolved (not bad I guess?).

Anyways, I do some skin design and general page setup locally on my machine using MS VWD Express (to modify the .ascx files) and ftp them up to their appropriate skin folders, but I don't think that's what you're referring to.  I'd say it's probably more of a headache to keep uploading your database file with your general page changes, than to get to the bottom of your performance issue.

i also use WH4L and have been for a number of years. indeed the issue of first time compilation of DNN  is an issue of concern specially for low traffic sites,
WH4L  provides a ping service to activate the compilation of ther asp.net/dnn engine every 20 mins. but they charge 20 $ a year per dom ain.
i discovered a better way
get the wget.exe file, place it in ur  Win OS folder
creat a cmd batch file (using a text editor)
run a macro scheduler to run the cmd file
& u can activate as many website as u like! and u can schedule the time (i.e instead of 20 every 10, or switch it off if ur traffic increase, cuz u do not need it)
alternatively u can purchase from snowcovered a commercial module (cleint site) for as little as 10$
the choice is urs.
if u need further info make another post!
have fun
