I'd like to allow users to define the types of banner ads that they receive.  For example, the Banner Groups could be defined as Restaurants, Spas, Hotels, etc.  I'd like users to be able to define a field in their profile so that they're only (or mostly) shown ads which are part of the Banner Group that they've selected.  I imagine this would involve extending both the core (for adding user banner preferences) and extending the Banner module to retrieve this information and display appropriate banners.

I'd prefer not to have to code anything, however that seems highly unlikely given what I'm trying to do.  Can anyone offer any pointers/suggestions as to a way to go about this without coding, or alternatively with the least amount of coding possible?
