Stefan,

My attitude - however you percieve it - is the result of the sum of my experiences with DNN.  There is a direct corelation.  If you are wondering if I'm a new or naive user, I am not.  I've been using DNN since early version 2.  I was very active on Asp.Net, before the forums moved here.  I beta tested the Client API in DNN3 and one of my skins was included with the DNN3 release package.  I'm pretty reasonable VB/ASP/ADO/SQL programmer - just not .Net.... or DNN.

Have you had to rebuild large sites from scratch because you can't update your core software?  Or have clients complain that they can't update because it is simply not a viable option to do so?  If you've had those experiences, perhaps you would have more empathy for my attitude.  And I  am not alone in this respect...

And so....yes, I have struggled about why I work with DNN.

Your other questions:

Do you know about the Benefector Program?
Yes.  I've considered it.

You are using modules that doesn't have any support and brake on updates?
I am only using them on older versions of DNN that I've not been able to update.  Live & Learn.  I no longer use them.

And you give them a second chance?

No.  Today, I stick with core modules almost exclusively.   I recently started using Scott McCullough modules because of his association with the core and his excellent reputation.

Do you know that DNN offers a Review Program for modules and skins?
Yes.  This is a recent addition to DNN.  This was probably added because of the state of DNN modules - the larger percentage of them were bad.  Just before this program was started I remember reading a blog on
Nina Meiers' ModuleReviews.com site describing just how bad they were. I'm very appreciateive that this has started, but this is not a guarantee that these modules will work in DNN 5.  Would you build a 500 page web-site on this premise?  No.  But if you know the developer, understand their background, their commitment to DNN, then you would consider it.  Not simply because it passed review...

Or the Marketplace?

No.  But on a quick browse, this seems to be a DNN-only "Snowcovered", but with DNN-Review as a requirement.  My comments above apply.  This protects buyers in the short term (excellent) but there is NO guarantee on the long term.  By the way, given the release schedule of DNN, this issue of "upgradeability" is not trivial.  I can't rebuild sites once every year!  Soon, that's all I would be doing!

I know that even some core modules are not state of the art, but do you know that every new module release candidate must master a Release Tracking Process where a lot of people are involved?
No.  But this must be recent too.  Otherwise, we wouldn't see something like Lists, would we!  ;-)  (ie: A core module that wouldn't be used by UDT even if the world split in two?!)

Listen Stefan,  look at my original post... was that not someone who was simply trying get "involved" and trying to make a constructive suggestion?  I believe you were telling me about a core module that you were *never* going to support.  I was simply stating that there is more than one thing wrong with the core, and have become frustrated with that.  My concern with core direction, is probably the most important concern there is.

Please don't criticize me for that...

Best Regards,

Although there is NOTHING written about it in the Roadmap, is there perhaps some plan to refactor the Core Lists included in the Categorization feature?  I'd hate to think that there is objective, constructive criticism of the Lists feature that doesn't result in it's improvement to the point that it could be used by modules...

Or alternatively, a proper replacement and a notification to developers that it will be depracated so that no NEW development is under-taken.  If either does not happen, then we are wasting people's time and efforts.

And we all know what a valuable resource that is...

Cheers!

I dont't see a value in continuing this discussion, because the decision not to support Host::Lists has already been taken (and I am personally not available to support anyone in doing this, because I get a number of more valuable support requests continously).

We will continue to cooperate with the core team and other projects teams to improve the quality and usability of DotNetNuke framework and modules. AFAIK there are currently no activities for replacing lists (although I would appreciate, if there were).

It's a shame you see no value in this discussion - I think a few people learned something.

I can appreciate that you're too busy to address things directly - Lists are not directly your concern and you have two projects to manage.  (I'm sure that's a handful.)

Do you have a recomendation on where we can continue this discussion?  The problem is that forums for the Core are few - and they seem to be focused on specific topics: localization, client API, search.

Thanks for your time...
