Hassan,

when replacing web.config for any reason like upgrades, please make sure, that you keep the following information from previous web.config:

  • connection string (DNN3: one string, DNN4: two strings!)
  • two encryption strings
  • DatabaseOwner and ObjectQualifier down in SQLDataProvider area

if you loose your encryption strings, all logins will fail. you can regain host access by following these instructions and need to reset all other passwords subsequently.

You must check these things:

  1. If your DNN version is 3.2.2 then you must have a web.config from DNN 3.2.2.
  2. These parts of web.config must be exactly the same as in the original web.config:

     <appSettings>
      <add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Server=YourServer;Database=YourDatabase;uid=YourSQLUser;pwd=YourSQLPassword;" />
      <add key="MachineValidationKey" value="xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" />
      <add key="MachineDecryptionKey" value="xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" />
