Hi All,

I use Lists heavily in the Smart-Thinker modules and have been petitioning the core to move them to Portal Level instead of Host Level for well over a year.

I continue to use them (e.g. Event Category etc.) in the hope that the madness will stop and they will be moved to portal level. They are 90% perfect, but it's that last little 10% (with the Host level design choice) that renders them almost useless (the localisation issue is another, but I was under the impression this was being addressed in dynamic localisation).

So... I will keep using Lists as it saves me a lot of time.
I actually started using a simple method of effecitvely using them at Portal Level - I suffix the PortalID onto a retrieval call and if it is null I make another call to the name without the portal (ie. the List I populated on install) - it's like a fallback so IF you want to change a list at portal level you can "override" it effectively by suffixing it with the Portal ID.

Not ideal though - the has to be Portal AND Host Lists...

For most of the module usages of lists, it is as easy to store the value as delimited string in ModuleSettings or TabModuleSettings, especially if you are forced to provide a UI for managing the items - and you can be sure, that there will be no interfering with other modules' settings.

Hmmm - ironically I used to have satellite DB tables for all my list data (with a Portal key) and a custom DropDownlist that takes in an enum and renders accordingly, but when I saw how cool Lists were in 3.x I got rid of all of it and moved it all into the core for the common UI, thinking the Lists Localisation and Portal limitations would be short-lived... I still have hope ;)

Its important to realise what Lists were designed for.  They were designed to replace the many Lookup tables that existed  (in the Application or Host scope) in the core in 2.x.  Now many people have used them for the wrong reason, and they probably could be extended and made better.  This whole area is under review at the moment.

Hi Charles

I replaced all my look up tables and threw away a lot of code and database code - are you saying that was the wrong place to use Lists for? I think that the design was flawed from the start as different portals will always want different information, so it should have had the portalID in from the start (or be able to inherit from the Host list if nothing exists at portal level). Glad to hear it's under review - I rely on them heavily (although I did think I was using them correctly to be honest)
