I am new to DNN, and use an older version to update the webpages for the company I work for. (New job, and hard to learn this stuff on my own...)

Is it safe to install this new 4 version over the old 3x version? Will it upgrade without problems?

The webpage I am responsible for is to be updated dayly, with things happening in the organization. I only know how to use the text/html module, so far. How do I download and get the article module to work?

The page could definately look better than it does now: www.inthus.no  Any advice?

Are there any good instruction-books  for beginners?

Thanks!

Hi, before you upgrade make sure you make a backup of everything - including the database. Just in case something does happen durring the upgrade. I would recommend the article module from www.ventrian.com it is really good. We use it on all of our sites. I started using dnn a year ago, and knew nothing about it. Now I can create skins, and am quite a bit more knowledgeable. I would suggest having a demo site made so you can test out all of the core modules, and learn about site / page settings and just test things. I have learned quite a bit from the forums here also, and a few other websites like www.dnncreative.com. As for documentation the only thing I have read is the documentation booklet that comes with dnn. Good luck!

Which DNN3 version are you running ? please notice, that there have been major changes in DNN 3.3.0/4.3.0 regarding user management and file handling. If you have a default web site, there should be no harm. Backup is always needed!!!

DNN 4.3.x has the same functions as the adjacent 3.3.x version. Switching from 3 to 4 is not a big deal, just make sure to swich the asp.Net version, before you start the upgrade. For the upgrade procedure, follow the instruction in the installation manual included in the documentation pack (available from download page).

Use install package, if you want to get all the newest versions of default modules or upgrade package, if you want to install upgraded / new modules manually. I always recommend for production sites to remove all modules not needed prior to installation for better performance. Please notice, that some of the new modules are rather large, those are Blog, Forums, Gallery, Repository and Shop.

There are 3rd party modules outperforming core modules in functionality, though core modules shall guarantee support of all future versions.

Upgrading DNN from 3.x to 4.x, in my humble opinion, is not for the meek and not without risk.

If the current version is doing what you want/need- what are you hoping to accomplish with an upgrade? I echo one of the previous comments about checking out the NewsArticles module at Ventrian.com- and, here's the bonus: it should work with your current DNN 3.x setup.

Give this a good read, before you try anything:

DotNetNuke 4.0 is designed to be used with ASP.NET 2.0. Please note that there is not an automated upgrade path from the DotNetNuke 3.x Source version to the DotNetNuke 4.0 Source version at this time. Based on the fact the folders/files in the Source version have been completely reorganized, DO NOT extract the DotNetNuke 4.0 Source version over top of an existing DotNetNuke 3.x version. Also note that the web folder in the DotNetNuke 4.0 Source release has changed from the root folder to the /WebSite folder.
