Thanks for your advice!

I do not know which version I am running. I started this new job a few weeks ago, and am trying to learn the basics, but I miss modules in the current version, that would make the webpage more news-page-like. I only use text/html module now, which makes for too much copy on the front page. www.inthus.no

How do I find out which version I am using?

Will 4th generation modules work with 3rd version DNN?

How do I upload new modules?

Thanks!

Helle

First, yes, there is a reason to migrate - DNN3 will come to an end of its life cycle soon and further developement will take place only with DNN4+. BEsides there are security issues, that make it advisable to upgrade to the latest version.

After I did a number of migrations from DNN 3 to 4, I can tell you, that upgrade is not very difficult. The warning of y01nk is valid for source code only, so please make sure, that there is no .vb o .cs file in your installation, before unpacking DNN installation or upgrade package.

I rather like the sound of that...

I do not want to belabor the point, but would simply point out that someone new to DNN should not think that this 3.-4. version upgrade will go, necessarily, without some effort... see this thread for how this has gone for some others: http://www.ventrian.com/Support/ProductForums/tabid/118/forumid/12/tpage/1/view/Topic/postid/13130/Default.aspx

Laslty, I would say that although DNN 3.x may be nearing the "end of its life cycle soon"- that is only in regard to it's lifespan HERE.

Shouldn't current installations of a stable instance of DNN 3.x continue to operate without incident?

Cheers

y01nk,

I don't think, there are no difficulties on an upgrade, but an upgrade from 3 to 4 is not more dificult than any minor one, there are only 2 additional pints to take care of, as I stated previously. There are many people reporting upgrade issues - most of them for minor upgrades and the majority did not read carefully the upgrade instructions (the others have inconsistencies in their installation and we try to asisst them here as much as we can!).

Regarding life cycle, with software, and especially web software, it is important to stay up to date

- due to developement of platform technology and client software (e.g. IE7)

- for security reasons (there have been detected issues for several DNN releases, that have been fixed in the latest one.

- most current core and 3rd party modules are developed against current DNN version and operate only on current versions.

Excellent points Leupold.

And, if I can add: I appreciate and have benefitted from your assistance.

I certainly wish the original poster "good luck" in her upgrade, if that is how she choses to go.
