Hi Again,

Will Gillen at www.swirlhost.com helped me get to the bottom of this.  He found that a 3rd party dll was "overriding" the "Dotnetnuke.Services.Update" namespace.  Although we did not determine which 3rd party dll was the cuprit, he devised a way to make the upgrade.

- upgrade to 3.3.7
- make sure everything works
- rename /bin to /bin_337
- upgrade to 4.3.7 (this will create a new /bin directory without any conflicting 3rd party dlls)
- make sure basic site comes up
- copy /bin contents into /bin_337 (this will place all the new dlls in the old directory)
- delete the /bin directory
- rename /bin_337 to /bin (this will result in the new DNN dlls along with the old 3rd party dlls)
- make sure everything works

This works, but I'm concerned that furture upgrades will face the same problem, so I'm also going to spend some time and see if I can find the offending 3rd party dll.

To be continued...

Wylie

I found the offending 3rd party module.  I bought in on Snowcovered a year ago.  It's still for sale:
http://www.snowcovered.com/Snowcovered2/Default.aspx?tabid=242&PackageID=3854

It was provided by Darren Neese of DNNRocks:
http://www.dotnetnukerocks.com/
http://www.neeseconsulting.com/tabid/1350/Default.aspx

It was marketed as a user defined table, but it overwrote the core UDT tables, contained glaring bugs and didn't come with any uninstall scripts.

When I suggested he should not meddle with the core modules and provide uninstall functionality with any modules he sold on Snowcovered he became angry that I used the word "should" and refused further correspondence.

Here is a snippet from our last email dialog.

Wylie: I think these kinds of errors would be caught before release if you had a more rigorous user testing policy.

Neese: I appreciate your feedback on the module itself. However, for the last time I will state, I have no interest in what you think what should or should not be caught when, or how I release whatever I choose.

Hope this helps anyone else who had the misfortune of dealing with this guy.

Hi Keith,

Now I'm having an "object not found" problem when I upgrade from 4.3.7 to 4.4.0.  The upgrade scripts run fine but I have problems when I open the site.

Also be sure to delete the Core Events module and install a fresh version.  Darren made liberal use of the core events tables and sql procs.

Good luck,
Wylie

Hi Again,

I've got a fairly involved process worked out to get to 4.4.0.  It involves some SQL scripts to clear out bad records.  I have to do upgrades incrementally.

My upgrades go like this
3.2.2 > 3.3.0 upgrade
3.3.0 > 3.3.5 upgrade
3.3.5 > 4.0.0 install
4.0.0 > 4.4.0 install

My question concerns the 3.3.5 > 4.0.0 upgrade.  Is this a valid upgrade path?

I ran into difficulties going from 3.3.5 to 4.0.0, so I'd like to keep this order if possible.

Can I go from 3.3.5 to 4.0.0?

Thanks,
Wylie
