upgraded from 3.3.2 to 3.3.6 then 3.3.7.  can't login to any old account.  can login with new accounts.  doesn't help much with host and admin.  how can i fix the old accounts, including host?

Did you copy your machine keys across.

You need to do this as part of the upgrade path.

I'm not sure if this will help since I was using 4.0.3 when I did this - but - I went to the aspnet_membership table, found the row for host (by the email address) and entered '0' in the passwordformat field.  Then, I entered the new desired password in both the password field and the password salt field.  Then, I was able to log in as host using that password.  Then, you can get in and fix the other accounts.
