Hello all, this is my first use of DNN and really any kind of serious web development at all.  I have been given an existing site built on the DNN framework to modify, the only information I have at my disposal is the folders and files I have before me.  I have already extracted it to a place on my hard drive and have created a virtual directory in IIS 5.1 pointing to it.  Now I need to get the site actually up and running and DNN installed before I can begin modifying the site, and here is where I am confused.

First, how can I find out what version of DNN this existing site was built on?  Would this info be somewhere in the web.config file or elsewhere?

Second, I notice this directory I have been given does not have any "install" folder, so once I find out what version of DNN this is and adjust my web.config file, how do I actually install it?  As of now when I browse to localhost/foldername all I see is a directory structure.

Thanks!

(a) Expand the file folder path: Providers\DataProviders\SqlDataProvider

There will be a file in here such as 04.00.02.SqlDataProvider . The version of your bequeathed DNN version will be those first six digits xx.yy.zz .

(b) You will need to obtain the Install file for the version of DNN which you are dealing with. Specifically what you are after is the \Install folder contained within that DotNetNuke install file. You can download older versions using this URL:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/dnn/DotNetNuke_4.3.7_Install.zip?download
(replace 4.3.7 with 4.0.2 or 3.3.1 or whatever version you find your DNN to be.)

(c) Replace and/or add the \Install folder into your local copy of the DNN directory structure that you placed on your hard drive. As you seem to know, you will need to adjust your web.config file for your local database. Using your web server, browse to (sample)
http://localhost/bequeathedDNN/Install/Install.aspx?mode=Install

Let me know if you need any help.

Thanks,
Travis

Thank you very much for the very useful help.

I browsed to that folder, for some reason there are 16 .SqlDataProvider files.  The first one is 00.00.00, the next bunch are all 01.00.xx, with xx increasing from 0 to 10, and the last few are 02.00.00 through 02.00.03.  So, are we dealing with version 2 here?  Seems kind of confusing.

Considering the version is so old, and I am pretty much completely revamping the site, I'm sure my client would appreciate an upgrade to version 4.  I can't ask them this until tomorrow, but can you think of any reason why this would not be preferred?  And then in that case I'm guessing I can just take the \Install folder from v4, drop it into my site's folder, and follow your instructions from there.

Thanks again.

It seems as if you cannot go from a version as old as something like v2 straight to v4, so I first tried to go to v3.  I extracted the v3 Upgrade zip over top of my current directory after first backing up my web.config file.  I then went to edit my web.config file, and to my surprise the one old has no MachineKeys in it, the only useful information I could get from it was the SiteSqlServer.  So, I updated that and went to the Install page.  When I did I got this error:

Access to the path "c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v1.1.4322\Temporary ASP.NET Files\<name of dir>\<garbage>\<garbage>" is denied.

I went to that folder to see if I could grant access, but that folder doesn't exist.  Actually NO folders exist underneath the Temporary ASP.NET Files dir.

Any ideas?

This is in rely only to your second posting in this thread, which is the one with a time stamp of 1:50:17 .

You have it correct that you're dealing with a very old version of DNN there. You will definitely want to upgrade the site to v. 4.3.7 with a fresh database. This will offer you so much more functionality and security. In fact, 4.3.7 is so good that I am currently upgrading my functional sites from v 4.0.2 to 4.3.7 .

Because this fact will affect everything, I'll wait and see how contacting your client goes regarding this needed upgrade.

You'll need to start over with a revamp, but it will be well worth it. We can get the older files inserted into this new 4.3.7 structure after a fresh 4.3.7 build.

Thanks,
Travis
