I want to put up a simple expense report and total across. If I have decimal columns Lodging, Air_Fare, Meals, Rental_Car, how do I perform a simple sum. I have tried using the SUM function without success and just a "+" concatenates the values like strings even though they are decimals.

Any suggestions?

Ken

"+" is fine. Please double check that all colums are of type decimal.

I created three columns d1,d2,d3 of type decimal and a calculated column sum with the extended settings d1+d2+d3. Worked as expected. If I change d2 to type string, it will just concat the values as strings.

Ok, I did some more experimenting and found that you are right. As long as each term is of type decimal, then you can perform d1+d2+d3. Including the result of a Calculated Column in another Calculated Column expression is where I was getting the string concatenation.

I finally figured it out. I have to wrap the result of the Calculated Column in a Convert function to make it a Decimal. If a Calculated Column is called Subtotal. Then to use it in another Calculated Column expression, I have to use : Convert(Subtotal, System.Decimal) + d1 + d2 + d2

Thanks,

Ken

Good found.

UDT3.3.7 is going to introduce an option to set the system datatype of a calculated column, which will help regarding sorting and calulating.
