I went back and tried installing version 4.0.3 and it appeared to install this time.  However I am getting errors on the webpages but I am starting a another thread. Just thought you might want to try installing the earlier version of DNN.

I get everything but part 6 of your post... I named my new database DNN4.... but what do i type in web.config????

this is something you would  know if you read teh installation instructions, also a very common mistake.  you need to edit the connection strings to the database so that your app will know how to connect to the database.

Just an FYI, I also spent 2 days and found my trouble. I missed the fact that the sql 2000/2005 connection string was commented out. once I found this it took 2 min to insall. The comment is not at the <add but at the server description.
