How reliable is it to use the newsletter to email 5000+ users. It seems a few modules also do this, but they all look and seem to function exactly like the newsletter module, if not using the same DNN core controls. Some have synchronous and asynchronous, but I'm not getting any test emails using asynch. It seems like it would time out with 5000 and you would not know the last email address it tried to send to (unless I guess I could look at the email server logs). I'm on a dedicated server using my own mail server (MailEnable).

I've been at this all day. I'm only testing with 1 to 5 users in a role. It sends out some of the times, while other not. I'm currently using the DNN Newsletter in the admin. DNN 4.03.04.

I just received this little notice. I'm guessing this comes from DNN when I use the asych setting???
Bulk Email Operation Started: 12/14/2006 5:38:20 PM
Email Recipients: 1
Email Messages: 1
Bulk Email Operation Completed: 12/14/2006 5:38:20 PM

I can verify in my mail server logs that there are no connections being made from DNN when a failure occurs, yet DNN says it was sent successfully. I'm lost and have no way to send this bulk email out.

You want an honest opinion, I say it won't work - back in 2004 or early 2005, I tried to send to 4,500 users, and it was the most horrible experience I've encountered.  While I think DNN is a first class product, emailing people on mass like that really does take some more infrastructure than DNN can handle.

I have my own email application (emailer) which really also is good for lists under 5,000 (XML is not a good tool in this space for using for tracking)  Currently my emailer application is about 1/2 way being converted to a DNN product (yay) and it's looking good, but even so, there are things we need to do on the server to make deliver mail as it should.

I'm about to send close on 50,000 email to my user base but we use a third party sql based application for this, and I have a third party .net app that handles how the mail is sent - eg.. how many per second / minute and will handle bounces.

You'll also notice that dotnetnuke doesn't send from here, but they have lots of names and I don't know about you, but I got an email today from snowcovered as I've been missing the weekly releases, and noticed it's not being sent from dnn any more, so if you're looking at sending out perhaps bcc text based email - non personalised, quick to send out, it might be ok, but I'm not confident that DNN and mail sending is quite polished yet.

Having said that - DotNetNuke really is a fantastic product and for the most part, there aren't that many users in the majority of people's lists and it does it well, but there are limits, and I found over 4,000 was the killer for me.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

It's not so much that DNN can't handle it, the issue is more that the current implementation of the newsletters module is not robust enough for sending out a lot of mails. I am thinking about creating a module that will be capable of handling any number of e-mails from within DNN... i just need to find the time to do it, or someone to sponsor me upfront ....

I am also looking for a heavy duty DNN newsletter solution. There are 2 commercial newsletter modules I have found that say they have advanced mailing features:

Datasprings Opt In Email Module

DNN-Modules Email Manager 2.6

It looks like they both send mail out via DNN, but they do have the ability to schedule and stagger the sending. Has anyone tried either and can give feedback?
