From the Internet Information Services panel, right-click the Default web Site and choose Properties. Click on the Home Directory tab. Browse to your DNN folder and click OK.

First of all, I presume you are doing this setup on a workstation, not a server correct? In any case, this could be confusing at the beginning and you need to understand what is going on at the IIS level before you get to the DNN part. I’d recommend you create a very simple HTML file just to test the IIS setup, put it in the root of the DNN installation, call it Test.htm.

Now, don’t confuse what a “virtual directory” is with what the physical directory for the Default Site is (in Home Directory, Local Path). You can basically use one or the other. The difference will become apparent later because depending on how things are defined is how you will enter the URL in the browser. For instance, if you change the default directory (the physical one) to point to the DNN installation directory, then all you need to enter in the browser (on the local machine) is Localhost or “localhost\test.htm”. In this case, the Portal Alias should just be “localhost” and you don’t need a Host Header or changes to the Hosts file. And by the way, whenever you change the Home Directory I recommend you do an IISReset.

This should work on the local machine for just one DNN installation (which can host multiple sites of course). I would recommend that you get this to work first before adding the additional complexities of having multiple DNN installations and accessing the site from other workstations. Note that you need multiple installations of DNN ONLY if you want to support multiple versions of DNN or development and production versions.

This is on a server.  This will be the only site on the IIS.  I need to get this up as dev.hyper.com as quickly as possible.  My boss is kinda riding me hard at this moment to get it done ASAP.  I learned a ton about DNN, Just need to know how to make it live with the correct naming and I will be good.

Open your IIS Admin tool.  Right click and view the properties of the default web site.  Here you can see the physical path to the root of your web site.  By default this will be something like c:\inetpub\wwwroot.  Simply extract the DNN install zip into this folder, configure your database connection and open the site up in the browser.

This will install DNN to the root of your web site.

If you are working on a server, I would recommend you forget about setting up DNN on the default site. To keep things clean, avoid further confusion in the future, and avoid possible conflicts with other applications, I would recommend (and Microsoft does also) that you create a new Web Site instead of modifying the default. I know you said this will be the only site on the server but never say never. You can point this new Web Site to the current DNN installation directory if you have it. I also know that the DNN documentation says to install DNN to a virtual directory of the default site but I cannot comprehend why they still say that, as you have seen, it does not make life necessarily easier.

To create a new Web site, go to IIS Admin and at the Web server level choose New, Web Site, on the Wizard dialog, enter any name you wish for the Description. The next screen, for “IP Address and Port Settings” is very important. Here you need to choose the IP Address to use, the port number (usually 80) and the Host Header that this site will respond to. You mentioned something in a previous message about using a different IP Address for the site, is that really necessary??? Note that you can host multiple Web sites, with totally different URLs, on the same server with just one IP address, what distinguishes them is the Host Header. In any case, if you really need to use a different IP Address, you have to add and configure that IP address in the TCP/IP settings of the network adapter, in that way it will automatically show in the pull down that you see in the wizard. Select the address you want (or All Unassigned), leave the port as 80, and (VERY important) enter the Host Header for your site, which you mentioned should be “dev.hyper.com”. Click Next.

For the Path, select the physical directory for your DNN installation and leave the “Allow anonymous access” checked. For the Permissions, select Read, Write, and Run Scripts. Click Next and Finish. I assume you can run the site with localhost correct? Then, connect as Admin for your site and enter dev.hyper.com as an alias for the site.

Test your site from a workstation and let us know what happens. The change to the Hosts file applies to the PC if you are having DNS resolution issues, don’t change the Hosts file on the server
