So, I unpacked the source to a directory, navigated to the root page, and everything installed just fine. I then tried to visit my new portal.

BANG!!! I'm hitting the same problem as many others (FileIOPermission problem).

After an hour of Googling, I'm changing the security to Full Trust in my Web.config (trust level="Full"). The site loads fine. Now I want to log in.

BANG!!! System.NullReferenceException

Now I think that I might be able to debug this. I am wrong. The installation solution contains all the necessary files, but the web site references the binaries, not the projects. OK, I might have recompiled the necessary projects, but somehow I chose the wrong path -- removed the binaries and added references to the projects.

BANG!!! it won't compile

The code uses some identifiers that my compiler marked as keywords. Namely, "group" and "order". I realize that these are from the LINQ Beta that I've installed. So, I enclose them with square brackets, and everything (eventually) compiles.

Back to the NullReference Exception. It failed to get the user, although the user "host" existed in the database. The reason for that was that the application in the database was "DotNetNuke", while my application was DotNetNuke_2. Not sure if it was there by default or I have changed it while I was fighting with the first error.

Anyway, now it seems to work.
