I'm creating a custom module similar to Announcements that needs to have a forum thread associated with it (one of those "Talk about this here:" kind of deals). Rather than having the user manually create the thread, I'd like the module to create said thread. Do the Forums have an API I can tap into to programmatically create a new thread? Or do I need to figure out the schema and just insert the data in my Data object?

Also, this module was going to be date sensitive (i.e. a start date, so the user can add items in advance and have them show up when their startdate hits). Does the Forum module have a similar feature? A publish date of sorts?
