Hello.

I just inherited the responsibility for our DNN Intranet site.  Literally, as the encumbent is no longer with us.  Sad :(

Anyway, we are running about 450 users on DNN 3.0.13 on W2K Server IIS5.  Some questions:

1) How old is the version we are running?

2) Is there any compelling reason for an upgrade?

3) What is the best way to become familar with DNN?

4) Is there an easy way to duplicate what is running in PROD on a TEST instance?

The existing site is mostly text based and is business oriented.  I would like to become somwhat competent before I change anything.  Right now the day to day requests are for content updates.  However, on a go-forward basis, I would like to improve the look and feel of the site and also add a couple of applications that I beleive will make the site more useful.

1) An employee search application-First Name, Last Name, Email...returns list of matching employees.  We have a directory, but that is cumbersom compared with the portal-killer-app employee search.

2) A Blog that our leadership can use to disseminate information.

Any experience shared in these two areas.  Especially the employee search one, would be appreciated.  Thanks and say a prayer for my dear departed colleague.

1) The version you are using is over a year old.
2) The most compelling reason to upgrade is the lack of support for DNN 3.x.   Even if you were to upgrade to DNN 3.3.7 the support for this version is limited and Core support is being dropped altogether.

Your intranet environment will be the deciding factor, whether you can upgrade to Server 2003, .NET 2, SQL 2005.  Most all of the core modules are concentrating development for DNN 4.x which needs all of the above.

If you can run in the new environment I would suggest starting from scratch instead of the upgrade.   This will give you the freedom of working on a new site behind the scenes with the features you want to include and you can make mistakes while learning DNN.  This would require a very simple DNS switch when the new site is ready.  An upgrade from DNN 3.0.13 would be difficult depending on what modules you have installed.  If there are third party modules you will have to consider an upgrade path for those also.

  • DNN Forums and Blogs
  • All of the DNN Documentation from the downloads section.
  • DNN Creative has some good free content.
  • TrainCert

Everything you are asking for is easily done with DNN and the core modules.  There are 3rd party modules available for free and $$ which will offer more features.

I disagree with the previous posters statements:

Currently 3.3.7 and 4.3.7 are functionally identical and though 3.3.7 is now in sunset phase, it is still supported by the core - though development will be done in DNN 4 only. Most of the current core modules still support DNN3 and 4, only Surveys has already been migrated and Reports is only available for DNN 4. Migration from DNN 3 to DNN 4 is not a much bigger deal than any in-Version-migration. DNN4 still supports SQL 2000 and IIS on Win2K, you only need to have version 2.0 of .Net Framework installed.

Upgrading to 3.3.7 or 4.3.7 should be possible - issues might occurre, if 3rd party module are installed or there are data anomalies. I suggest to try it on a copy of your installation, you need to create a second web site, duplicate your installation folder (where the web.config resides and default.aspx is placed, backup you database and restore to another name, grant permission and adopt connection string. Please refer to the installation guide for details.

I would like to upgrade the 3.0.13 to 4.4.1 since I have 450 users and there doesn't seem to be a straightforward way to migrate the users.  I have backed up the existing files for 3.0.13. I have backed up the database.  I have no 3rd party modules and the site is very simple.  The big concern I have is with Contacts.  There does not seem to be a Contacts module in 4.4.1.  So if I upgrade...do I lose Contacts?

Please help.
