I want to have the first part of articles on my home page and then I want to have a read more button that allows people to have to login before reading the rest of the article.

what is the best way to do that?  Thanks, in advance!

I think a public Announcements module could be used to point to content that is visible to registered users only.

yes, but you should place a textHTML module on the target page, visible to non-authenticated users only, telling them that they need to log in to view the content.
