The recent DNN newsletter said "we have a simple upgrade mechanism for users to move from DotNetNuke 3.x to DotNetNuke 4.x". No link was included nor could I find that on the site. So...

1. I'd appreciate a link to that area on the DNN site.

2. Does that upgrade mechanism allow current 3.x sites to run successfully on 4.x? Do add-on 3.x-specific modules need to be upgraded separately or replaced to run on 4.x?

3. Anything else I should know about this?

Thanks ...

you can upgrade any DNN3.x.y installation to DNN4.x.y or later (that means to current DNN4 version) including the existing modules by taking the following additional steps:

  • delete any *.vb files in your installation first
  • stop your site and switch ASP version in IIS Site /Virtual Directory settings to ASP.Net 2.0
  • make sure, that the site does not share an app pool with oder ASP.Net 1.1 sites - create an individual AppPool if necessary
  • use release.config and make sure to adopt BOTH connection strings (and encryption keys, database owner and object qualifier as usual)

Never forget to start with a backup of installation directory and database!

Good Luck!
