To answer my own question.  No it is not necessary to create a link as the favicon.ico just gets picked up automatically, well by FF anyway.

you are correct, the favicon.ico file in the portal root folder is handled by the skin, the link is put in the page automagically ;)

btw... IE7 seems to handle favicons a lot better than IE6
