I'm pretty new to DNN. I am trying to create a subsection of my site as a child portal. It will have some distinct navigational elements but also some elements in common with other parts of the portal it sits in. I'd like to reference those existing modules so changes in one will filter through to the rest -- can this be done in a child portal?

Also, even though it's multi-portal, it's really all one site so I'd like the site search to pull results from the main site portal and the child portals. Can this be done?

Sorry if these are common questions. The forum just hangs when I try to search it.

thanks! Chris

please note, child portals are completely separated from the parent portal and only share the domain name. If you want to use a different design or access restrictions for parts of your web site, you should not split up into parent and child. Child portals are useful, for separate projects, they have their own users, roles, pages, search index and content.

As Sebastian says, child portals are intended to be wholly separate websites from their parents, but without requiring you to have a separate domain name.  The better solution for your problem is to use a different skin for pages in the "sub-section".  The alternate skin would allow that section to have its own navigational elements and its own distinct appearance, but would otherwise share data and users with the rest of the site.
