I have subscribed to GoDaddy.com hosting.   It seems to offer a reasonable service for a very reasonable price.

Shared hosting is fine for my uses and I don't need access to the host account or the operating system.  The only niggle I have is that DNN cannot be installed in the root URL of the account, so I must use   http://www.myUrl.com/dnn/   Is this restriction specific to godaddy, or is it something more general to do with DNN?   Does anyone use a host with similar features & price without this drawback?

It really depends on the specific hosting plan you are using.  Hard to compare other hosts without knowing your plan requirements.  Personally, I stopped using discount hosts last year.  I was a longtime user of WebHost4Life, but in my experience low cost hosters just can't afford many of the little extras.  Their margins are so thin that their business models require them to automate as much as possible and to keep installations simple and uniform.

I chose to pay a little more each month and use a host that would provide more personalized service and have been happy ever since.

Yes, I agree - pay a bit more and you generally get more. At work we have a dedicated server running DNN. More expensive, but we need the control.

I have just been messing around with a personal project and wanted somewhere cheap and cheerful to host it and was wondering what other people were using.  There is such a bewildering array of hosts out there and I'm just trying to narrow it down a bit  (but being on the core team I understand if you are reluctant to be seen making commercial recommendations).

I had been using GoDaddy.com and found that their shared server plans didn't work well for me. So I tried their VDS (Virtual Dedicated Server) plan and was pleased with the added control, and improved speed, but pages still took a bit too long to load (8-10 seconds sometimes). I recently did some searching and came across several options, the best of which for me, was www.IHostASP.net.

  • Their pages load very quickly. They have a test page at www.IHostDNN.net, which loaded in 2-3 seconds for me on the first load and 1 seond after it had been stored in the IE cache.
  • They have a starter plan for $8.95/mo which includes e-mail, etc.
  • Their plans go as low as $0.70/mo per domain if you decide to purchase in bulk
  • I have a lot of control: Create databases, Connect to databases remotely (i.e. connect to my website database from my desktop), Complete FTP for backup and restores, and a very simple, logical user interface.
  • DNN installations are autoscripted, so you can click a few buttons and have a complete DNN website running in minutes without having to create a database, submit a support ticket, or anything. It's a start to finish, automated process.
  • I also was very impressed with their service. They are extremely knowledgeable and responsive.

Knowing what I know now, I reccomend www.IHostAsp.net over any other hosting companies I have used or have come across.

I'm curious, as another customer of ihostasp.net, if you have been experincing database issues like I have. Twice this week, my site has bee down for several daytime hours. I get the "couldn't connect to database" error page. Of course, no one answers the phone at ihost. This is really hurting my business as I run a community website and just spent several thousand dollars of my personal cash for marketing efforts. I am at my wits end, as I cannot afford ihosts' mistakes. How hard is it to switch to another hosting company?
