I've created some child portals that were assigned to one parent portal and now I need to transfer them all to a different parent. Is there a way to do this without having to delete them and rebuild them under the new parent? I searched through the Portals table hoping to find a simple ParentPortalID assignments for the child portal records but couldn't find such an approach that would make transfer simple.

Any ideas?

Thanks, JT

The names "Parent" and "Child" might be a bit misleading here. Technically they are the same, with just one difference: the http alias for a parent has this form: www.domain.com, while for a child it is www.domain.com/child. There is no relationship whatsoever between portals, other than that they are all part of the same DNN instance

I guess you want to change the aliasses of some child portals from www.domain.com/child to www.anotherdomain.com/child, but keep the portals in the same install. If so, all you need to do is add the new aliasses to the http alias list of the portals in question (to do that, log on as host and go to Admin> Portal Settings, scroll to bottom of page) and make sure that IIS is set up to work with the new domain names...

Erik,

Thanks for the helpful information. The reason I am structuring parent/child portals is because I want to share content and users seamlessly between my portals. Providing users with single login across those portals is essential for me. Many of the add-on modules that provide this functionality suggest that they only work with parent/child portals (such as http://www.snowcovered.com/Snowcovered2/Default.aspx?tabid=242&PackageID=5612&search=parent+child&pagenumber=0). I would prefer not to have to create child portals but chose to do so on the basis of this needed functionality. So, all I need to do to support shared user single login with these modules is to change the aliasses?

Thanks, John

again, from an application point of view there is no technical difference between child and parent portals. There are more modules that can do the same thing, for instance this one: http://www.snowcovered.com/Snowcovered2/Default.aspx?tabid=242&PackageID=5378

You might want to ask the vendor of the module you saw why they explicitly mention parent and child portals. AFAIK that is only semantics
