I'm reading the DNN Skinning.PDF and I was wondering how to work with the ContentPanes. If I look into the DNN blue skins. Some panes are directly defined into the ASCX file : contentpane, leftpane, toppane, ...

The documentation talks about CONTENTPANE1, CONTENTPANE:2, ... With a definition into the SKin.XML to link to another name. That Skin.XML does not contain that information, only BREADCRUMBM and TREEVIEW are defined.

So I'm just wondering what is the exact way to define the content panels. and if contentpane, leftpane, ... can be directly used in the ASCX what are all possible values.

If you are working with ascx files just create a div to run on the server with any id you like.

<div id="ContentPane" runat="server"></div>
<div id="BelowContentPane" runat="server"></div>

All names are valid, but it helps to use the standard ContentPane, LeftPane, RightPane, FooterPane etc as it makes it more likely that you can use a new skin on the site without having to manually move the content. Any content that has been set to display in a pane that doesn't exist in a new skin will get rendered in the ContentPane.
