If I understand the way different Portals work, each child portal has a complete separate user-base. Is there a way to have multiple portals, but users are "shared" between each portal?

My situation is that my client wants 4 different subscription based communities. DNN looks like a good fit. However, the client imagines that though most members will only join one of the communities, some members will want to be members of more than one. I know I could create one portal and have 4 different roles, and then have pages/modules assigned to different roles, but that's feels so messy.

Is there a way to "share" memberships between commnunities?

AFAIK there are 3rd party modules available for this, e.g. from dnnmasters.com.
