I wouldn't recommend leaving it that way, just wanted to see if that was the issue.

What OS are you using? XP? XP requires the aspnet user by default, be sure you chose the LOCAL aspnet user, not one off a domain.

XP Pro, and over the course of today I have given every account on my pc full rights (one at a time) with no success.

The EVERYONE did it though, so now I have ensured that using the install version works locally, and having been assured by the host company that the permissions will cope, I am now going to try installing onto the remote server.

Thanks for your help , much appreciated, you saved a nice laptop from being thrown out of a window in despair.
