Find that ASP.NET Identity is "Machine\ASPNET" in Windows XP but "NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE" in Windows 2003. Why there is a difference?

you'd have to ask Microsoft, however, i suppose it is security related

I've recently been doing a lot of research on ASP.NET. The difference is .NET 1.1 versus .NET 2.0. It's merely syntatical change.

Not true ibihab. Server 2003 has always used NETWORK SERVICE even before .NET 2.0 was released.

It was a difference by Microsoft to align all service processes to run under the Network Service account.  ANy service that is Microsoft related will run under this process, I believe it was done to help with administration an other items of that nature.  At least this is what I have heard.

I also believe that SQL Server runs under this process.
