I got my group at work to get this installed for our intranet - woohoo! My own experience with it is very slight - I had installed it at home a few times and played with it just a little bit - I know pretty much nothing about the acutal module dev process, permission requirements, and the like (yes, I told them this when I pitched the idea 6 months ago).

I fully expect to answer the majority of questions with something like "I'll look into it and get back to you", but I'd like to solicit some general topics/bits of knowledge from you all.

One thing that will be an issue for us is permissions - our company security has the DNN box locked down fairly tightly - we don't have access to IIS settings, for example (have to submit a form, blahblahblah).

Can module development and deployment take place (a) with a functioning DNN site, and (b) without permissions to access/change IIS settings?

What good, clear resources are there providing an overview of site customization, module development, and so on?

Thanks a jillion for any nuggets of wisdom,

cdj

once you set the permissions for the NETWORK SERVICE account you can then leave it for good.

Module dev and deployment do not need any permission changes or IIS settings.  The whole module dev process only requires you to have a Super user account on DNN to load new and updated modules.

There is a module development guide if you search for Module developers Guide you should find Michael Washington's document.  For skins etc i recommend www.salaro.com great skins at excellent prices.

Plus these forums give great feedback on any issues you run into.

Actually the module development process should not be done on you server with your live site.  You can develop modules on a windows xp professional box with a development site and sql express and visual studio all there.  You might want to check out virtual PC for some interesting options for development and testing.  Check the core member blogs a couple of those guys have talked about their use of virtual PC.

For development you will need access to the database to be able to add tables and stored procedures if you modules will require it. Once you have a functioning module then the superuser can install it on the live site and then portal admins can place it on the pages (tabs) as desired.

Sorry i should have clarified.  You do all your dev on a local instance of DNN with a local db so you have complete control over your environment.

Then once you are finished you install on the live site logged in as host.
