Hi, I'm new to DNN. I just downloaded the DNN 4.4.0 Install pack and run it. I follow the instruction in the pdf file. After creating a DNN website (with File System location), I follow the instruction in the Welcome.html file however I can't make DNN to run after pressing the Ctrl+5. Here is my situation:

I use Windows XP SP2. I use VS2005 (ASP.NET 2.0) and SQL Server 2005 SP1 (NOT the Express version). It seems that the welcome file is a little bit outdated with the version I have. For instance, the connectionString has the name/key = "SiteSqlServer", not "DotNetNuke" as in the Welcome.html file. I fixed this. At first, I have some trouble connecting to my database server. I notice that the Install pack comes with the Database.mdf file and it has been already added in the VS solution, but it can't connect to my SQL server engine (server does not accept remote connection >> I go to SQL Surface Config and enable it but no use, too). After a while playing, I figure out that I had to turn off the User Instance. Now the Test Connection button works and I can see that it attachs the DB in my SQL Server Studio Management. I think DB configuration is done. Notice that I didn't have to go thru Step 1 as in Welcome.html.

In step 2, I managed to change the connectionString for both locations so it can connect to the DB. Now they look like this:
<add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=.\SQL2005;AttachDbFilename=C:\Documents and Settings\me\My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\WebSites\DotNetNuke Website1\App_Data\Database.mdf;uid=sa;password=123;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

<add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Data Source=.\SQL2005;AttachDbFilename=C:\Documents and Settings\me\My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\WebSites\DotNetNuke Website1\App_Data\Database.mdf;uid=sa;password=123;" />

I believe these changes help DNN to establish DB connection to my DB engine so I don't get the DB connection error anymore. I think I'm done with the DB settings.

As I use the File System, I don't need to configure the IIS. I try to Ctrl+F5 and get this message:

DotNetNuke Configuration Error

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

DotNetNuke has extensive file upload capabilities for content, modules, and skins. These features require custom security settings so that the application is able to create and remove files in your website.

Using Windows Explorer, browse to the root folder of the website ( C:\DotNetNuke by default ). Right-click the folder and select Sharing and Security from the popup menu ( please note that if you are using Windows XP you may need to Enable Simple File Sharing before these options are displayed ). Select the Security tab. Add the appropriate User Account and set the Permissions.

  • If using Windows 2000 - IIS5
    1. the {Server}\ASPNET User Account must have Read, Write, and Change Control of the virtual root of your website.

  • If using Windows 2003 - IIS6
    1. the NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE User Account must have Read, Write, and Change Control of the virtual root of your website.

My question is, do I need to create a virtual directory in my IIS? I even tried to create a virtual directory pointing to the DotNetNuke WebSite 1 directory and give all the permissions both in IIS and in Windows Explorer but it doesnt solve the problem. The Welcome.html says in step 4 that, if I use the File System option I don't need to configure the NTFS File Permissions, but as you see, I'm having the problem.

Did I miss anything or did something wrong? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your reading my bible :)

Please read " I just downloaded the DNN 4.4.0 Install pack and run it." to " I just downloaded the DNN 4.4.0 Starter Kit and run it."

Sorry for the confusion

if you click on your my compter in explorer and in tools choose folder option >> views >> all the way down you have use simple file sharing (recomended) >>>> go and unclick it.

now if you right click your DotNetNuke folder you will see security and there allow Network Services  to have full control of the folder.

Thanks for your answer. I even had done it before I posted this. I gave the Network Service to have to Full control but nothing worked. The weird thing is I'm using File System option, so as the Welcome.html, I should not have to do that (but I still did it just to make sure).

Any other help?

thanks

DotNetNuke Upgrade Error

The Assembly Version ( [ASSEMBLYVERSION] ) does not match the Database Version ( [DATABASEVERSION] )

ERROR: Could not connect to database.

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)

I started a new installation but got this error. What is this error? How to fix it?
