I have just spent seven weeks trying to get 4.4.0 Dotnetnuke to run on their systems. I finally have one site up but was notified by one of their lead technical managers that 4.x tries to take control of their servers via extensive permissions and rights requirements. And 4.x is not meant to be run in a shared hosting environment.

As I am a bit new to Dotnetnuke I have no idea if these statements are true. What is your opinion?

Should I be looking for a Dotnetnuke hosting vendor? I just cringe at the 100 plus hours that have been wasted.

The last thing I have is the site seems to work in all cases except when trying to EDIT links, I get an error stating the link editor is unavailable. Any ideas on this one?

Is there a way to convert the 4.4.0 site back to a 3.x site?

Thanks

Carl

DNN can be run in a shared hosting environment.  It does though require some configuration of the servers just as any other web application using the .Net framework.  It comes down to what the host wants to provide.

Moving the site shouldn't result in loosing the work put in.  You just need to back up the all files in the DNN directories and the SQL database then restore these on your new host. If you have some experience with SQL it is as easy as it sounds.  If the host doesn't provide you access to your database via Enterprise manager/ SQL Server Management studio then you might have to use one of the third party back up modules that can be found on Snowcovered.com or see if your control panel allows you to back-up your database.

Another way would be pay someone to move the site for you probably worth it to save 100+ hours work.

As to converting it back to a 3.x site. The only way I know of would be restoring from the last ver3 back up which would mean you would loose the work done since.

The statement by the hosting company is incorrect and there are many hosting companies that support DNN (iaspnet, webhost4life, EasyCGI, etc).  There are many post with peoples opinions about which hosts are better, just do a search on hosting.  Plus there are many hosters that are benefactors.
