default.css and skin.css conflicts

Why are there defined elements in the default.css file for the basic HTML tags (p, h1,h2, img, etc.)?I'm now having to add extra overriding code to my skin's css files just to achieve the same effect that I had going in DNN6 with a lot less code. And I don't want to change the default.css file because this file is overwritten with every DNN upgrade.
