Display Notification and Messages Icons

Is there a way to Display the Notification and Messages Icons in the header WITHOUT displaying the login and registration links and the Welcome [user]... information?? I have a link that is in a pane that takes the user to the login page or the register page and above this pane right in the same place as the default login and register links I would like to place the display notification and messages icons once you have logged in.

Is this possible and how can I do this?
