I am new to DNN and am becoming frustrated. I had my host provider install DNN 4.4. I logged in, messed around, created a few dummy pages, users and what not. When I started deleting some modules from the Home page, the system crashed, and gave me errors to the extent that I had to pay to have DNN 4.4 reinstalled by the host provider. So, this time I thought I would get smart and immediately backup my site on my PC which I did.
Then I went back and did a few things like the first time and downloaded this version of the site to my PC in another directory.
Then I configured my Login to be at one of my new pages. (I thought the Login link would now be at this page) and after I updated and logged out, I could not Login in because I had not put the Login Account module on this page. So now I am trapped. But not to worry, I have backup on my PC. So I upload my site from my PC after deleting everything on the server and now I can't get anything but errors.
Obviously, I have no idea of what I am doing (I did start programming in 1963, yes 1963) with this stuff. The host provider has my SQL 2005 on another server (which I can not get to).
I have tried to find some documentation on how to manage my site and operating environment, but I can not.
When I add a page or control, what file is changed?
Why can't I download my site to my PC and then upload it back and have it work?
What do people do when they are locked out of their site because of some problem? How do they go back to a safe place in their development?
I have seen in the forum how difficult (impossible without 2nd party software) it is to move a site from one server to another, why is this so?
What is my SQL database used for besides application specific data?
Is anyone out there, help!
