Hi all

I am considering using a domain alias on a site through DNN, but I am concerned that effectively the site will be viewed as two identical sites on different URLs by the search engines and get punished for duplicate content.  Is this the case?

Cheers

I have had the same site being published under two URLs for a short period of time as I made a transition from http://portal.iowacomputergurus.com/Mitchel to http://www.mitchelsellers.com and google and other sites have listed both sites without any difficulty.

Google does count this against you, it is better to make the Url that you don't want to use anymore do a 301 (object moved) redirect.

What about in the case of a child portal - if you give that an alias so it appears as a separate site, does it not still appear as a sub domain of the parent portal?

From what I understand, Google penalizes pages with duplicate content, regardless of domain.

You probably have to reach some threshold to where it really looks like SEO Spam to really make a difference though.
