Hi!

I have a user that is working in DNN 3.X but it needed some new modules and other stuff which I promptly did in DNN 4.X, the site is now working OK in DNN 4.X, but I found the problem that all the users are in the old DNN 3.X format. How can I migrate those users to the new DNN 4.X database.

I have other sites in the old DNN 3.X and in the new DNN 4.X so I cannot just Upgrade the old DNN 3.X because the modules the old installation is using are not in the new DNN 4.X site. I have my boss on top of me because of this and I need this URGENTLY.

I thought that moving users from aspnet_Membership, aspnet_Users, Users, UserRoles and UserPortals will be sufcicient.

What I did is:
Copy the table Users (from DNN 3.X to 4.X)
Filled UserRoles and UserPortals (On DNN 4.X) with the New UserID, new UserRoles and new PortalID
Copy the table aspnet_Users with the appopiate change to ApplicationId (why there's only one ApplicationId for all the sites?)
Copy the table aspnet_Membership with the appropiate change to ApplicationId

Everything else remains the same.
Do I need to do something else? What am I missing?
For now I just want the users to be able to login and see the portal just as before, I'll worry about Profiles Later

You also have to ensure that you are using the same validation and decryption keys for your application, otherwise DNN cannot check the password values.

I am actually working on an article to help explain the process needed to perform this type of data move.

I'm positive that I'm NOT using the same keys :(

Is there something that could be done to solve it?

I do now have a tutorial posted about this topic.  Please visit my website if you are interested in viewing the entire process as I tested it.

You have about 3 choices I believe...

1.  Change the validation and decryption keys to match your old site, then reset the passwords manually for the host and admin accounts in your new installation using known passwords from your last installation.  (Fairly easy, fairly fool-proof)

2.  Leave the machine keys as they are and require that all users use the forgotten password feature.  (Not a good idea....and might not work as I have not tested it.)

3.  Manually set 1 password for every user, again NOT a good idea....but it is an option.
