I'm looking for documentation on creating custom skins. I understand what skins are and how to change them, but now I'd like to create my own. Is there a good reference that explains the basics, some tips and tricks, etc? I'm *VERY* familiar with XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, Photoshop, etc, but I'm new to DNN.

Also, would you say the following statement is very true, true, false, or very false?

"Using skins, it is easy for a competent web designer to customize a DotNetNuke website, and basically any layout, look, and feel, is possible, including "Son of Suckerfish" style drop-down menus and other XHTML/CSS/JavaScript wizardry."

Thanks,
John

First, look in the documentation for DotNetNuke, specifically the Skinning document.  All the basics are there.  Also, Nina Meier's site at www.xd.com.au is a good reference, and a subscription to www.dnncreative.com is worth the money for a new skinner.  Nina has "DotNetNuke Skinning for Dummies" coming out in a month or two as well, might want to pre-order it.

Your statement is false though.  You can do a lot, but without custom programming you won't get everything you describe.

I found this GREAT FREE video that helpped me allot...now if i can only find a good one for content panles :)

Real-World Skinning Using ASCX User Controls

http://www.arrownuke.com

In this session we covered some of the gotchas of DNN Skinning and how you can get around those with some effective planning when you start with your design. We walked through setting up the folder structure so that we could get in and edit the files on-the-fly without having to use the skin package uploader. To demonstrate what proper planning can do, we started with a Photoshop-based design and cranked out a skin with four different layouts in less than thirty minutes.

The video of this session is now available for FREE here at ArrowNuke.com. All you have to do is login or register to gain access.
