Just for information VMWare have a tool for creating a vm image of an existing physical pc for free download and with the free vmware player / server it could prove very useful for people wanting to do testing on their DNN setup (if they have their own server) http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/

Although I am not totally familiar with the VMware applicances, I can tell you that there may be licensing issues with some Windows components, even though SQL Express is free.

Also, the virtual appliance still seems like it is a lot of work to setup.  You can easily make a backup of your DNN directory with WinZip and backup your database with a simple script, or you can do both with one script.

In addition, I have been doing DNN development for some time and I have never had the need to reinstall DNN or the database because of a module screw up.  Why don't you post the specific problems you are running into so that the community helps you polish your skills and you don't have the need to reinstall that often?  Interesting concept huh?

Carlos

Well the legal issues never even crossed my mind. But of course if I set it up myself I will be able to use the license I allready have, so then I will circle that problem. I do see that making one "singel" install for all to use will be a legal hazard.

You all seem like a freindly crowd here, so next time I get caught in endless problems regarding DNN I will take you upon on that and post my problems here. Some other communities I have frequented have not been to kind on noob's, so that is why I bitten the bullet and tried to figure out things in my own pace.

Thanks for the friendly reply

If you search through the VMWare appliances you will see that they are all based on some Linux/FreeBSD or other open source operating system.  You cannot create and redistribute a VM with a licensed OS like Windows or MacOS because you do not have the rights to do so.  Distributing the OS requires that everyone have a valid license for the OS and requires the OS to be distributed with a license that allows it to be redistributed.  So regardless of whether or not you could redistribute DNN or Sql Express, you could not redistribute Windows so it is a moot point.

With that said, the new DotNetNuke installer makes it really trivial to install a new DotNetNuke instance so the need for a VM is greatly reduced.  Where I see VMs being very valuable is for doing testing.  We use VMWare internally for doing our product reviews so that we can always roll our test environment back to a baseline snapshot after performing our tests.

Ok I see the legal barrier. So I will make one for myself. I have the needed licences.
Rollback and testing is excatly wha tI had in mind when posting this. And when noob like me errors tends to break the application just too often. So for me it would be nice to just load it once more when an error occur.
