Hello fellow nuker's. I am noob here, and have struggled with making new custom modules for DNN. Often I break the application when I make errors and that is frustrating and time-consuming. I need to replicate the DB, and some times even need to make a newa install on my workstation.

I was over at the VmWare site to look for a ready-made solution but could not find anything for DNN.
If one of the wizards in here could make an vmware image we could all start to take it to the limit without spending time reinstalling it when we break the application. We could just restart the app and things would be all good.
Personally I do not have the knowledge to make this work, but I am sure someone in here easily could make a copy that will run on all pc's, without needing the asp.net framework, the ms sql databases or anything else.
That way even more people would be able to explore and benefit from this great open-source solution.

Take a look at the link for a better understanding of what I am thinking of.

If you have comments do let me know. I am sure this would be great for more people then just me.
What do other people think?

What I failed to mention was that I am looking for a way to make DNN run like a virtual machine.

Look at this lik to see how they made a solution for mambo and as you might now mambo is like dnn but for LAMP/linux/apache/Mysql/Php;
http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/520

Downloading that image let you start play around with mambo in a heart beat. And something like that is what I am after but for DNN. Do you know if there is allready made a solution like this for DNN? Is there planned a solutionlike this, or is there people in here that have the big brain to put soemthing togheter? I belive both asp.net and also the developer tools from MS is also released in a free version along with the new free MS SQL server, would that work as a base? And how would one start to make an image from scratch? Is this hard to do?

After one have installed the vmplayer one could just start up the application, and restart it if it chrashes.
But how would this work along with the compiling thing? Would it be possible to compile the application after changes are made to the source?

There must be people in here who knows a thing or two about how I would start to make a DNN virtual machine?
Or is this something that I am curently all alone pursuing? If this is allready done please speak up and let me know.
As I have played around with aother virtual stuff it seems that changes med to the application is handled pretty well. So that just shows us that an developer/noob enviroment like this would be of huge benfit. If somethings breaks just reset the player and it works like nothing wrong ever happend.

Any thoughts and comments I will recieve with greetings.

Although I am not totally familiar with the VMware applicances, I can tell you that there may be licensing issues with some Windows components, even though SQL Express is free.

Also, the virtual appliance still seems like it is a lot of work to setup.  You can easily make a backup of your DNN directory with WinZip and backup your database with a simple script, or you can do both with one script.

In addition, I have been doing DNN development for some time and I have never had the need to reinstall DNN or the database because of a module screw up.  Why don't you post the specific problems you are running into so that the community helps you polish your skills and you don't have the need to reinstall that often?  Interesting concept huh?

If you search through the VMWare appliances you will see that they are all based on some Linux/FreeBSD or other open source operating system.  You cannot create and redistribute a VM with a licensed OS like Windows or MacOS because you do not have the rights to do so.  Distributing the OS requires that everyone have a valid license for the OS and requires the OS to be distributed with a license that allows it to be redistributed.  So regardless of whether or not you could redistribute DNN or Sql Express, you could not redistribute Windows so it is a moot point.

With that said, the new DotNetNuke installer makes it really trivial to install a new DotNetNuke instance so the need for a VM is greatly reduced.  Where I see VMs being very valuable is for doing testing.  We use VMWare internally for doing our product reviews so that we can always roll our test environment back to a baseline snapshot after performing our tests.
