I am probably at the limit of my knowledge of the housemenu at this point, and I am not sure that I can help you troubleshoot this.. But, am I correct in assuming you installed the housemenu skin object correctly- that is by uploading it as though it were a module?

Literally all I know about the housemenu I learned either from the houseofnuke site (unfortunately not a resource again yet) or from THIS tutorial at dnncreative.com.

What is a static menu?

as opposed to a dynamic menu, where the child pages "flyout", a static menu has all the child pages already expanded. Depending on the organisation of the site, the static menu can be either extremely efficient, or horribly offensive.

Good Luck!

Thanks, y01nk, for your explanation on the static menu.

I did install the HOUSEMENU skin object in the same way one would install a module, in Module Definitions screen, as the very sparse instructions indicated. Thanks for the link to dnncreative for reference on the HOUSEMENU. I'll take a look at their articles and see how I can make things work.

Thanks again!

Lee has a terrific website there- well worth the money.

I don't think I'm letting any cats out of the bag here, but I think a lot can be learned from inspecting the source for the skin, and the css.

You might also give the Inventua side menu a look.

Cheers

Yes, there is a lot of good and interesting info on the site, but I did not register . . . it's much trouble to get my employing company to register for me and pay the subscription fee, and I need the info quickly. Nonetheless, I found out that my problem with the object reference error message was that I need to register the skin object  in my .ascx skin file. After I had done that, then I could use <dnn:HOUSEMENU etc. etc.> with no problem.

But then now my menu is displaying all messy, with all sorts of bullets and big space in between menu items. Now I gotta find out how I can style it properly. Sigh . . . every step is such a struggle!!!

I had looked at Inventua's menu modules, but they don't seem to offer what I need . . . which is a graphical representations for menu items. I've been looking long and hard, but it seems that there isn't anyone out there who is making a module or skin object for this, even though there have been people voicing the same need before.  Look at this thread I started about using images in menus if you are so inclined . . .

Thanks again for your contribution.

Hi JC,

If you are interested in buying a menu module then you may want to have a look at the Snapsis CSS NavMenu.

It allows you to use the page's Icon as an image and turn off the page names so that you have an image only menu.

It should do everything you need, and if not I will be happy to work with you so that it does.
