Just upgraded from 4.4.1 to 4.5...Now I receive this error when trying to create a new child portal: Error creating Profile Definitions.

Can't do much else except Cancel.  Going back to Host->Portals, I see the portal I was trying to create, but without an alias.  Clicking on the Edit Portal icon, I get the following error:

Error: Site Settings is currently unavailable.
DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. ---> System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at DotNetNuke.Entities.Portals.PortalSettings.GetSiteSettings(Int32 PortalId) at DotNetNuke.Modules.Admin.PortalManagement.SiteSettings.Page_Load(Object sender, EventArgs e) --- End of inner exception stack trace ---

Anyone else having troubles creating child portals with 4.5, or know what needs to be done to fix this particular issue?

Problem Solved!  I saw in another post that someone was having the same problem and the suggestion was to use the "DotNetNuke" template when creating portals...some of the other templates (I was trying to use "portal") have been causing problems.

Yes, but that doesn't solve the problem when you really need to use a template from a previous version. I'm having the same problem and if I don't solve it I'll have to create the whole site from scratch. :(
