From my point of view, the main difference between a CMS and a portal is workflow and staging functions in CMS. Most larger organizations use CMS, that provide a workflow for all content added to the site:

  • submit text
  • submit images
  • redact content
  • assign categories
  • publish content
  • submit for translation
  • redact translation
  • publish translation
  • submit changes
  • ...

Staging on page or site level is another typical demand. DNN currently does not contain workflow (only basics like moderation are implemented in some modules) and staging, though this might be an important enhancement sometimes in the future.

Good points! I've used different portals with varying workflow capabilities, though never as comprehensive as a CMS. But the staging issue is a true drama. In my company, we use a portal application as a CMS, and we have a 3-server development/test/production set-up with nightmare scripts to move content among stages. This setup has always been less than satisfactory, troublesome, and almost defeat the whole CMS concept. In the end, we have more and more priviledged users publishing directly to the production environment, and use the other stages more for module development.
