I am experimenting with Dot Net Nuke as a portal framework for a Soaring Club www.offwidth.com/silverado and am very satisfied with the general functionalilty available for such a simple interface, however the initial load (new browser session) is terribly slow for each page of the site.  Once opened for the first time performance is fine (due to caching I suppose)

In any case the site I've constructed does not seem to be too complicated, say 5-6 containers per page with 3-4 of them using simple modules.  There are no large images used in logos, only a couple in a document repository and a gallery, but that shouldn't make the pages load slow i don't think.

I am  hosted with GoDaddy and am running 4.4.1

When I called GoDaddy then claim the site loads fast but I don't have that experience nor do the people I've asked to test for me.  I'd appreciate any thougths or general starting points to troubleshoot this.

Thanks

Bryan

This is an effect of ASP.Net: when a web site is called first, it is compiled and the compiled site is kept in memory. After some time of inactivity (by default 20 min) the site gets recycled and the compiler result is gone. There are various options:

  • disable app recycle (can only be done by hoster in your case, and they might not be willing to disable)
  • use a ping service like host-tracker.com, that calls your site every 15 minutes to check if it  up and prevent recycling
  • uninstall all modules not used on your site will improve performance of compilation

I've run into the same situation with my sites.   After a ton of trying different things I'd recommend the following:

1) Use www.Host-Tracker.com and set 3-4 links to be monitored every 5 minutes

2) Install a 3rd party compression agent.  I just started using  PageBlaster and really have seen some pretty big performance gains.  They have a free version for you to try out, if you install please visit their forums first to review the configuration information.  So far I've been able to cut my load time in half.

3) I also recommend using DNNRefresh or SmarterTools SmartPing.  You can install this on our home, work, or whatever computer.  This also pings (GETs) your site.

Also a major area for speed considerations is your skin.  If possible try to run a few different skins to see if the speed changes.

There are a ton of links in their forums on how to speed up your site, these are the ones that have worked for me.

Do you use Oracle?  Then try GoldFish.Net

Get it from CNET Download.com!

How does one disable app recycle or increase the recycle timeout (assuming admin-level access to server)? Thanks.

In IIS6 you can turn off recycling using the IIS manager.  In IIS5 you can turn off recycling using the ProcessModel section of the machine.config and/or web.config.
