Dear Group,

I recently purchased the rights to two domain names through my web host, CrystalTech.com.  I'd like to have visitors to those domains be redirected to subwebs of my main domain.  CrystalTech has instructions for doing so, but since converting to DNN, I'm not sure how to accomplish the same thing.

The CrystalTech instructions say to add a bit of ASP code at the top of the default page of the primary domain "before any HTTP tags":

<%
sname = Request.ServerVariables("SERVER_NAME")
sname = ucase(sname)
if InStr(sname, "DOMAIN1") <> 0 then
  response.redirect "subdirectory to go to"
elseif InStr(sname, "DOMAIN2") <> 0 then
  response.redirect "2nd directory to go to"
end if
%>

So now that I'm DotNetNuke-ized, what do I need to do to re-direct visitors to sub-webs?

Just following through on this...

I'm still a little fuzzy on how DotNetNuke circumvents the default.htm page that still resides in my domain's root directory.  Secondarily, why does the Address box in my browser now show the IP address for my domain instead of http://www.mydomainname.com?

I've got Walker's Professional DotNetNuke 4 book (Wrox) but I can't seem to find answers in there to either of those questions.

But back to business: if DotNetNuke is "avoiding" the default.htm page in the root directory of my domain, just what page would I even modify with the redirect instructions that CrystalTech gave me in its FAQ?  Even if I found out which page is the "home" page now for my DotNetNuke portal, isn't it modified every time I make a change to the home page?  That is, re-generated from scratch?  Therefore, wouldn't any custom modification I do to it be lost?

Thanks for reading this over.

SIncerely,

Create 2 parent portals, 1 for each sub-domain in DNNN.  Then you just simple setup the DNS entries for the 2 additional sub-domains to point to the same IP adress that your main DDN site uses.  Once that is done all vistors to all the sites will be run through DNN and the correct portal will be displayed to the users of each site.

ssmehaffie,

I appreciate your response, however I may not have conveyed that I don't believe that I have portal access to my DDN site.  My hosting provider, CrystalTech, gave me the choice to install DNN on top of my existing site.  I consented and now I'm trying to make good use of it.

So your suggestion to create two parent portals is no doubt a good one; however I don't believe that I can create them.  Before I wrote this message I went through all of the Admin menu options and it certainly didn't appear that I had the ability to create "parent portals".

I could certainly ask for assistance from CrystalTech.  Would that be my next step?

You should have a host login to your DNN site and then you can create parent / child portals.  If you cannot do that then you are limited to only having one site hosted by DNN an lose one big feature of using DNN.  If they cannot give you a host login access to your DNN site, I'd start looking for another hoster.
