The plan would be o open and close the db whenevr a client request data.

But I can't even make the connection unless the db is on my machine, which is not realistic.

The webserver is on a different domain than the db. I have rights in both domains.

Oh.. yes.. now I understand.

Asp.net user (or network services or whatever) user is local user and there is no information about this user on other computers or domain. You should use impersonate within web.config file (or I can you provide a component that allow network identification)

Like I mentioned before, I have tried impersonation and gave rights to IUR, NETWORK SERVICE, ASPNET and WEB-ANON usres, none of which worked for me.

Ok, I'll bite, what is the module you are talking about? Where is it? Any documentation? Free? Price?

Sorry, module is not free (99$) . You can try fully functional demo from http://components.init.si/

if it works for you then I can describe you how to use component for your needs (in this manner you can use component for free) or you can just buy module :-)

Module was not designed to use in this way, but there is "workaround" (one extra step) - I just try it and it works. Step by step procedure for your example:
-(download and install module and )  first enable "Allow save binary data to file system" inside module settings
-input shared folder path, username and password inside "table settings" (fields are gray).
-input connection string (odbc - example: Driver={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)};DBQ=c:\Inetpub\Examples\App_Data\indooTestDB.mdb;DriverId=25;FIL=MS Access;) to existing mdb file on  local computer
- input valid table name from this file
- click update
- input connection string with path to mdb file on shared (same as above) folder
- click update and then use module as you want

Next version of module will support this without this extra step :-)

Regards,

Primož
