on 99% of shared hosting providers the only method to get  a true backup is to have them do it.

I have 3 live sites upgraded to 4.5.3, on shared hosting, upgraded myself.

No issues on them that is readily apparent to me so far.

UPDATE: BTW, I forgot to mention, I did use Mitchel's upgrade process. Went flawless.

Mitchel,

Have you triend this process on a 3.x to 4.5.x upgrade?

Ed,

Yes I have done the upgrade from 3.x to 4.x.  However, the instructions are slightly different.

The biggest things are that you have to make sure that the new web.config file has all the important information.  For example you have 2 connection string settings in 4.x.  You also must ensure that the ASP.NET version has been switched from 1.1 to 2.0 when you go to try the upgrade.

In a nutshell those are really the two biggest differences.  There is a need for more testing with a 3.x -> 4.x environment change as third party modules have  a bigger chance of breaking but overall the process isn't that much worse.

Hi Mitchel,

Does your tutorial work for upgrading from 4.3.5 to 4.5.3 on a hosting provider?

Cheers

Dennis,

Yes the entire tutorial should work on a hosting provider and for a 4.3.5 -> 4.5.3 upgrade.

The biggest thing is that you will make the file changes locally, then FTP them out, that is the ONLY difference.
