We wish to define settings for new subscribers. Where do we find the page to define what must be entered for subscription
and what to display, password length, etc? We looked under User Accounts - Manage Profile Properties and User Settings,
however, none of these appear to be what where after?

for membership settings, have a look at User Settings in Admin :: User Accounts menu item. To alter these settings you need to edit web.config manually.

"User Settings in Admin :: Manage Users menu item" These exact menu items don't exst in the 4.4.1 installation
we are using. I have admin:user accounts which has a drop down menu item manage profile properties. However,

these are all selected as visible and unselected as required. This doesn't make sense since if I register as a new
user I am presented with ~4 mandatory text boxes, first, last and display name, email and password.  If the manage
profile properties was for this I'd expect those name boxes to be selected as such, which they aren't.

Basically I'm confused what these profiles are for and where the new user registration ones are. What I'd like to
do is remove the display name option and define it as always being first initial and surname, for all users. I can't
see where and how to do this. I'd also like to be able to find how to include optional text boxes for address and
phone numbers, but as non-mandatory.

sorry for using the wrong expression, I corrected my previous post.

Manage Profile Properties command is used to modify the "additional" information stored per user, on top of the basic information username, password and email address. These basic infromation are always required for registration, same time or afterwards a user can be forced to fill in required profile information, settings for this are accessible from User Settings command, where you can also get displayed the membership settings from your web.config.

In User Settings, you also can specify, if and how DisplayName get populated (AFAIR this has been introduced in DNN 4.5.0).

For additional user information extend the profile by adding the desired profile properites, for details have a look at Charles' Blog: http://www.dotnetnuke.com/tabid/825/EntryID/479/Default.aspx
